Associate Professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

Cody A. Chastain, MD, MEHP, FIDSA, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He is also the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education Program Evaluation and Improvement at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Dr. Chastain received his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California, where he received the Chancellor’s Award as the top overall graduating student. He then completed his residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. While at Duke, he was awarded the Haskell Schiff Award by his peers for excellence in clinical medicine. After working as a hospitalist for Duke University Health Systems, Dr. Chastain completed subspecialty training in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he subsequently joined the faculty.

Dr. Chastain leads the division’s Viral Hepatitis Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and cares for people with HIV in the inpatient and outpatient setting. He actively collaborates in research focusing on HIV, viral hepatitis, and medical education. Dr. Chastain is an active educator in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education and has received multiple teaching awards, including the Bonnie M. Miller Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Hugh J. Morgan Teaching Award, and the William Schaffner Teaching Award. In addition, he serves as the Principal Investigator for the Southeast AIDS Education and Training Center.
