Dana King, MD, is a rural family medicine physician and clinical researcher with more than 20 years of experience. He is a Clinical Provider at Atrium Health, Wake Forest Baptist, in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and was previously a Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Dr. King received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He completed a family practice residency at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Maryland; a family medicine fellowship at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and a master’s degree in clinical research at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.

He started his career in rural North Carolina, where he provided family medicine, obstetrics, and nursing home care to adult and pediatric patients. Dr. King then transitioned into academia, where he focused on clinical research, teaching, and rural medicine. Through his work, Dr. King has played an integral role in expanding rural health and family medicine residency programs across West Virginia and North Carolina, including expanding the Rural Scholars program at West Virginia University School of Medicine and establishing a Rural Residency program at East Carolina University in North Carolina.

Dr. King’s research focuses primarily on cardiovascular health, diabetes, and hypertension. Over the course of his career, he has authored more than 125 peer-reviewed journal articles, 3 books, and several book chapters, and has presented his findings on cardiometabolic disease, rural health, and more across the country.

Dr. King is a member of the AAFP Board Review Express national faculty and completed a term on the executive board of the North American Primary Care Research Group. He is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
