Zelma C. Chiesa Fuxench, MD, MSCE, is Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a board-certified dermatologist whose clinical work focuses on chronic inflammatory disease with a particular emphasis on atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Dr. Chiesa Fuxench’s research focuses on the epidemiology, risk factors, and genetics of inflammatory skin diseases, primarily atopic dermatitis, and she is actively involved in clinical trials of novel therapies for atopic dermatitis.
Dr. Chiesa Fuxench was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Puerto Rico (Bachelor of Science in Biology, magna cum laude), and her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine (magna cum laude). Dr. Chiesa Fuxench completed an internship in internal medicine at the University District Hospital (San Juan, Puerto Rico), and her dermatology residency at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. She then relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and completed her Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Chiesa Fuxench’s career has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Psoriasis Foundation, Women’s Dermatological Society, and the Dermatology Foundation. She is a member of multiple societies and organizations including the American Academy of Dermatology, Society for Investigative Dermatology, and the Women’s Dermatological Society, among others.
